“Fontographer 5 is the best-in-class font editor, the flagship application that has launched a thousand faces (and more). Fontographer 5 is extremely easy to use but packs a lot of technical sophistication under the hood. So you can create professional fonts without being a technical expert. Learn more about Fontographer, or try FontLab VI, our modern pro font editor. It is the little sibling to FontLab Studio 5, so it has most of the same tools, plus the same interface used to create most of the world’s commercial fonts. It is a great option for beginning type designers wanting to get started on designing typefaces and creating or modifying fonts, without a major investment.
FontLab or Fontographer? Fontographer or FontLab? We need to get this question out of the way before we get started. Personally, I started in Fontographer in the early s and gradually built a little sideline of designing fonts. They were selling a little on Myfonts.
My personal advice? Learn FontLab. If you are serious at all about learning to design fonts, you will need the power of FontLab. It is necessary for excellence in letterspacing, kerning, OpenType features, and more. My books will show you how to use it.
